Team Mi Guk Kwan, USA: Day 1
The team all met early Thursday afternoon at JFK airport. Traveling to the Netherlands was a long and thankfully uneventful journey, yet the team bonds have already begun to build among the members. Even though sitting on the runway for an hour and an eight hour flight, the plane ride was nonetheless very fun. Despite KJN's "dominant performance" at onboard trivia, Master Terra Steele from PA and Linda Goodman from CT were a pretty tough bunch to beat. Upon arrival during the early morning hours, we were met by a wonderful lady who was a great tour guide for our morning excursions. She took us through several small farming villages before reaching Amsterdam. She was very informative, and I'm sure everyone took a little something away from her historical facts of this country. We stopped at a quaint little town outside of the Schiphol airport. Here, we saw the great art of wooden shoe making of Amsterdam. This trade was invented hundreds of years ago, but is still used today, as many of the people here still wear them for outside use and for keeping warm. As we made our way through the community, the sites of traditional Holland were a plenty; in fact, it is one of the only towns left in the country that still has active windmills. There were once over 15,000 windmills located here in Amsterdam before its Industrial Revolution; now there are less than 1,000. Also in the town, and a definitive highlight for most in our group, was a delicious cheese farm. A village woman gave us a demonstration of how they make and then age the cheeses anywhere from 1 month to 3 years. After the demonstration, everyone had afield day with sampling over 30 different cheeses; kudos to these folks for creating the best pesto infused cheese this side of the Atlantic. Finally, the bus took us to the Rho Hotel, located one of the most "unique" city centers in the world. While some took time to rest (at this point we were going on 32 hours of no sleep), the more die-hard members of the group went out and started the exploration. All and all, the majority of us were content with having a nice relaxing night because of the early competition ahead of us for the next two days. Every one is pumped up and ready to get out there tomorrow morning and compete and to represent Team Mi Guk Kwan, USA. Tomorrow all of us will be competing in individual forms and weapons. Ryan Guerrero, Kyle McGinnis, and Connor McGinnis from Shelton, CT are excited to represent us in the team form competition with the hyung they demonstrated at our National tournament this past year. Team Mi Guk Kwan, USA signing out... Wish us luck and Tang Soo!
